Nicanor Perlas, the Presidentiable

IMG_0010

Just recently, at the recently concluded second wave of “HER TIME IS UP: 2010 Election Forum” held at the UP College of Law by KAISA and several student councils in UP Diliman, I had the chance to interview and listen to what Mr. Nicanor Perlas has to say on the Maguindanao Massacre. Here's his video interview c/o Noemi Dado and Blogwatch.ph:

In choosing someone to succeed President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in 2010, one must take into serious consideration what the candidate has planned, his vision, and how he or she will run the country.

In the forum, he laid out his vision and 6 pillars to spell out his platform (which you can browse at the link provided below).
  • Erradicate Poverty and Enhance Quality of Life
  • Advance Moral and Effective Governance
  • Uphold the Integrity of Creation
  • Build Partnerships for Social Justice
  • Promote Creative Education and Inner Change
  • Mainstream Visionary Initiatives
It is good to note that Mr. Nick Perlas is the first to have released a concrete platform of government for his bid for the Presidency of the land.

IMG_0016

To be honest, I like his ideas, his vision, his will and courage to take the road less traveled by. Certainly, he says, it would be hard for him to win. He has too little following compared to seasoned politicians, and those who are already in the limelight. He has much less financial support as compared to others. So what are the chances he'll win?

In our elite democracy, where money, power and fame dictate societal norms, one could dare but only imagine how he'd penetrate the system. Let's see if Mr. Nicanor Perlas can do it. I like what he wrote in his site, "The Trap of Traditional Notions of Winnability," and he says, "The good news is that there is a tremendous burst of initiatives in the Philippines trying to reclaim authentic democracy in the national elections of 2010. The bad news is that the would-be bearers of change politics are still stuck with the thinking of the old politics. Nowhere is this more evident than in their concept of “winnability”. To win in 2010 means, for them, to have, from the beginning, name recognition, political machinery, financial and other resources, and endorsements."

IMG_0025

He continues in "Winning An Election the Non-Traditional Way", and this is the point, "One of the tasks of new innovative politics is to reframe old notions of winnability and not to remain trapped into letting old winnability concepts dictate the future of new politics." In a truly democratic country, everyone has the chance to be President. But with the unequal field politics is being played in, I doubt if that's the case.

Yesterday, I was surprised to learn that a group of artists, passionate at reviving the art of verbal jousting, commonly known in Filipino as Balagtasan, existed, and is great at it. This is my tribute to them, for showing me and reviving my passion to write and share my thoughts in Filipino. I might not be as good as them when I speak, but at least on paper, in my own words, I will be able to spark and idea, a creation, a life outside the box, and inside the hearts of many.

Ngayong gabing 'to, matutunghayan ninyo,
Dax Cutab, Siege Malvar at Gene Abrajano.

Walang masasabi ang sipag at tiyaga,
o galing at talino ng ibang grupo,
o litanya man ng kanilang artista,
sa diwa at puso, kanilang pambato,
sa laro ng angkin at mga salita.

The Batutes, matatawag sa kanila,
From 'da original king of Balagtasan,
Si Jose Corazon de Jesus a.k.a.
Huseng Batute, ang kapita-pitagan.

Mga batutero, bibigyan tayo
ng konting patikim. Pagpasyahan ninyo,
kung totoo lahat ng sinasabi ko.

Heto, pagmasdan n'yo ang isang video,
kung saan silang dalawa'y magtatalo.

Kung si John Lloyd Cruz ba, o si Papa Piolo?

DSC01461

According to their Facebook page, The Batutes is a "performance art group composed of GP Abrajano, Dako Cutab, and Siege Malvar. Having named themselves after the original king of Balagtasan, Jose Corazon de Jesus a.k.a. Huseng Batute, the trio aims to revitalize the Filipino verbal joust in metered rhyme by infusing their own brand of humor and poetics to the traditional structure of Balagtasan. They have performed in various venues all over the metropolis, and are now hard at work on their first collection of Balagtasan."

This is the rest of the video (again, I caution those who may be offended by lewd or sexual utterances, play at your own risk). :P

P.S. The verbal jousting at House of Runes was just done impromptu, and by special request, without audience, therefore this is not their A-game. It was just for fun, for our own pleasure. Hehehe

One step back, Two steps forward - Graduation Pictures

Graduation Pictures

Last Monday, we were scheduled at the National College of Public Administration and Governance for our graduation picture-taking. Barbs, Tenai, Reg, and I were the first ones that day. Since I was the only guy, my hair and face were finished way earlier than the girls. I was the first up with my Toga and Sablay shots. I waited for them to finish their shots before our creative shots.

I didn't came prepared with mine, so I had them think for me. The Agencie, our photographer, suggested a look, and I gave it a try. In the end, the make-up and the gluing for more than an hour paid-off, and I think I'll like my creative shot. As to what it was, wait and see :)

Barbie was Poison-Ivy, Athena was a Dance-master-diva with Marc, Reg didn't have any. Kent was stone-age-macho-man (or so I think). Chester was like Echo in his commercial, with wings. Dai was awesome as well!

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, The Manila Forum

The University of the Philippines Administration, through the Office of Student Affairs, invited us to go to the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, The Manila Forum, mounted by ABS-CBN in the historic and scenic University of Sto. Tomas in Manila.

We left the University of the Philippines using the new Varsity bus of UP at around 5:30am to reach UST around past 6am. The bus went through Gate 10. We were asked to dislodge from the bus for the first line of security clearance. We were asked to line-up alphabetically, and were each called, our ID's checked, went through body search, by UST security.

DSC01394

After that, we were asked to proceed to the venue proper, the UST Medicine Auditorium, where heads of states, including Pope John Paul II, gave talks before. At the entrance of the building, security and PNP were stationed, we were checked using metal scanners (the ones you see in the malls) and were rechecked and searched by more security and US embassy personnel before we entered the auditorium at the topmost floor.

DSC01396

Admittedly, it's a nice experience, and truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. A lot were excited, some, restless because it was held early in the morning. Before it started, the crew ran us through practices (cheering, clapping, cheering for our schools, again, and again, and again).

It wasn't very funny, because it was like we were being in the noontime show Wowowee. The difference between the two, however, is that at least in that show, people receive prizes.

DSC01399

Maria Ressa, Ricky Carandang and Pinky Webb the lucky anchors of the forum. They were joined in by ABSCBN News bigshot Charie Villa and Ging Reyes in the audience. Also, Tony Velasquez and Ces Drillon joined in via video-patch in Visayas and Mindanao.

DSC01407DSC01408

It was quite frustrating to note that the discussion wasn't that beefed-up with issues the Filipino people were dying to ask and know the real deal. It wasn't as straightforward and juicy as I would like it to be. Of course, Madame Secretary answered all the questions well, as expected. She cleared up some issues, but stuck to those we already know.

DSC01409

It was just sad that we were sort of paraded in the forum, and didn't get to ask questions that matter, questions millions of Filipino people are dying to ask, dying to know the real score. As a law student said in his facebook wall, "Policy issues were not discussed (why the US hasn't ratified the Rome Statute nor signed the Covenant on the Protection from Forced Disappearances). More intelligent questions, please. All gloss, no grit." Well, I think I expected too much from the forum.

In the end though, I still congratulate ABS-CBN for mounting such a forum - for the chance given to us to be recognized internationally once again.

DigitalFilipino E-Commerce Summit and Globe GCash

The DigitalFilipino E-Commerce Summit, an intensive 2-day educational seminar on e-commerce strategies that is scheduled to take place on November 12 & 13, 2009 at the Hotel Intercontinental, Makati City.

One interesting bit about the summit, besides sharing "best practices (what to do, what not to do, execution, measurement)", one of the sponsors, Globe GCASH and Ms. Rizza Maniego-Eala, President, G-Xchange, Inc. will talk about "Challenges and Opportunities in MOBILE MONEY TRANSFER: Implementation of GCASH" at the event. It will be a "look into Mobile Commerce in the Philippines and how its applications have evolved to be able to service both mainstream and unbanked markets. Insights on the challenges and opportunities of Mobile Money transfer within the mobile commerce ecosystems, and a specific look into its current role in the banking industry."

From my initial knowledge and a little bit of research, GCASH allows Globe and Touch Mobile subscribers to pay or transact for the following using their mobile phones:

- domestic and international remittances
- utility bills
- interest and amortization of loans
- insurance premiums
- donations to various institutions and organizations
- sales commissions and payroll disbursements
- school tuition fees
- micro tax payments and business registration
- electronic loads and pins
- online purchases via GCASH Click
- airline tickets

GCASH is tied-up to BPI Mobile Banking enabling Globe and TM subscribers to do various bank transactions through one's cellphone. GCASH is also used as a wholesale payment facility particularly for rural banks wherein various moeny transfer services are offered such as: text-a-deposit, text-a-sweldo, text-a-withdrawal, text-a-payment, text-a-remittance.

Also enabled by the GCASH platform is GCASH REMIT, the cash pick-up remittance service of GCASH. GCASH REMIT makes it easy for overseas Filipino workers to send their hard earned money from abroad, and their beneficiaries can instantly claim their remittance in over 2,500 GCASH REMIT pay out locations in the Philippines such as pawnshops, rural banks and money changers.

Globe also recently launched Immortal Load, the first load with NO EXPIRY via GCASH. You can use it to purchase load whenever you need it.

In this day and age, the use of cellular phones became a necessity, with more than almost every Filipino having at least one unit. Moreover, I think this is why companies such as Globe, together with different industries, like the banking industry, are trying to make available services that once was very tedious to do. Right now, it's just as instant and as mobile as it could get.

Globe Tattoo Wireless Internet Broadband Tips

Globe Telecom's Globe Tattoo Broadband has been extensively advertised all over the radio, television and print ads for quite some time now. I personally have been seeing a lot of people using this device to connect to the internet, and have been saying good things about it. While searching about Globe Tattoo Broadband Internet, I found some really helpful tips every user should know.

    Picture 8

For all of you, I would like to share with you what this mobile internet is really capable of doing and how it works. The Globe Tattoo Broadband is a mobile internet USB stick that poses as a modem so that users can access the Web anywhere, anytime they please. It's that convenient.

However, surfing speed in the internet using this gadget varies from where you are when you are using it, and what type of signal your Tattoo is connected to. "Connecting via 3G and High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) of course enables you to surf at high speeds."

Some tips on using your Globe Tattoo more effectively (as Cher shares in her blog):

    picture 8

Check if your area is included in the HSDPA listing. This will save you a lot of frustrations and calling up the customer service from time to time. As a reference of the variable internet speeds depending on the signal, here's a screen shot of the chart from the Globe Tattoo's official site.

If you're going to be spending several hours just browsing or downloading media, it's better to set your browsing status to Time-based. The setting for all Globe Tattoo SIMS by default is Time-based. You will be charged Php5.00 for 15 minutes.

If you're just going to quickly check an email or a site, set your browsing status to a "Per-KB" browsing. You will be charged only 15 centavos per kilobyte. To switch from Time-based to Per-KB browsing just text KB to 1111 using your Globe Tattoo SIM.

To check your default browsing, text STATUS to 1111.
Do not worry because there's one for everyone! Check out these Globe Tattoo Broadband New Skins and pick the best one that best suits your personality and style.

    Picture 5

For more, if you have the talent in art and designing, why not show it off? "Dazzle us with your design sense and see how the YOUniverse will rate your creation." Upload your personally designed Globe Tattoo sticks at the Globe Tattoo Broadband Gallery. Globe will be awarding P5000 to the best designs. The winners also get the chance of seeing their work produced on to actual Globe Tattoo USB skins. Now, isn't that great? :)
