Beng Villamil, Ton Bacungan and KAISA sa University Student Council

2 more days to go before the University Student Council elections in the University of the Philippines - Diliman. It's a year now since I won as one of the 12 councilors in the USC, the highest student organ in charge of 22,000 UP students, and supposedly their rights and welfare. It was a year full of ups and downs. It's tough, but we survived. It's time to pass on the torch to the young bloods. Who am I going to entrust the USC and almost 23,000 students, Iskolars ng Bayan? Of course to someone I trust and I know to have the best intentions and qualifications for the job.


My vote goes to Beng Villamil, incumbent College of Science Student Council Chairperson for USC Chairperson and to Ton Bacungan, incumbent Engineering Student Council Councilor for USC Vice-Chairperson. Beng is the only one who has handled and led a student council, he has the most number of experience in student service, and the brightest and most talented in the bunch if not at least at par with the other two. Ton, on the other hand is very much intelligent, diligent, experienced, hard-working, and most of all very humble. He is not a brat.

Since both have handled or been part of the Student Councils of the College of Science and the College of Engineering, the two largest colleges in the University, respectively, we could see the support both colleges have given to the two. Capping everything off with the USC Debate Forum, we could clearly see who emerged to be the fittest or the best for the job. It's Beng Villamil and Ton Bacungan.

Also, let's remember the United Councilors of Beng and Ton. Tbacz Bactol, Marielle Bordado, Ranel Cheng, Chorva David, Marvee dela Resma, Val Inting, KKK-Kriska Kalingking, Gino Leynes, Cams Maranan and Pat Tobias.

Together with them are our College Representatives to the USC. Gumi Gumilla for the College of Architecture, Cyrus Cruz for the College of Engineering, Mela Abesamis for the College of Home Economics, Gelo Flores for the College of Human Kinetics, Jeric Cruz for the College of Law, Des Ico for the National College of Public Administration and Governance, Rey Reyes for the College of Science, and JC Danganan for the Asian Institute of Tourism.

These are our candidates, and I pledge and assure you that they're the best for the job, and that they will work hard for you, the students of the University of the Philippines - Diliman, as they have had in the past. They bring with them their own strengths, weaknesses, personalities and experiences in this journey. Let's VOTE for them this coming February 24.

Election Campaign Season begins in the Philippines

Today* marks the start of the official campaign period for the 2010 National elections in the Philippines as set by the Commission on Elections. But for students of the University of the Philippines Diliman, it marks the second day of the official campaign season for University Student Council elections, which will be held this February 24, 2010. Since yesterday was the University Research Break for most of the students, the start of the national campaign season and the local campus campaign season can be said to be on the same foot.


People argue that the UP local campus politics incubates the same atmosphere, if not the same mentality and experience, with that of the national counterpart. One of the reasons this is said is maybe because those who are running the national campaigns of these presidential, vice-presidential, senatorial and even the local candidates were once UP students themselves, and maybe at one point or another, have managed or have been involved with local campus politics when they were younger.

Besides labeled as being similar to the national scene, experiences and observations show that UP political parties, namely Alyansa, Kaisa and Stand-UP, the three political organizations in the University of the Philippines – Diliman, are cutthroat vying and besting each other for the available University Student Council positions for the Academic Year 2010-2011.

Campaign: Blue, Red and Yellow

Colors have been associated with those who are running for the Philippine Presidency. Senator Noynoy Aquino, Former President Erap Estrada, Senator Richard Gordon, Senator Jamby Madrigal, Former Defense Chief Gibo Teodoro and Senator Manny Villar have been identified with the colors yellow, orange, red, green, green and orange respectively. These colors represent, brand and package these candidates in a way they stand out and appeal to their supporters and the people in general.

In UP, this parallelism and similarity is very much seen inside the university as colors, more specifically, red, blue and yellow, are matched and identified to the longstanding political color-spectrum debate of Stand-UP, Alyansa and Kaisa.

The University elections will come as a shock, and sometimes an entertainment, for the freshmen, who will get to know and see first time the candidates who are campaigning all around the campus. They will also see some if not many similarities and differences between campus politics and national political exercises.

As starters, candidates are trained all the works – from how to dress, walk, talk, shake hands, engage students in interactive discussions, and a lot more – this is why when a candidate comes in your classroom and campaigns, you’ll be impressed at them

They are packed very properly, and can answer questions from local campus issues to the broad national debates, even presidential candidates answer during forums. Sometimes, you would even consider your student leader better at answering questions than your actual presidential candidates.

Issues and the Internet

All electoral exercises have rules promulgated by the authorized electoral body responsible for the elections. But even with rules in place, people get to find loopholes and ways how to circumvent or avoid violations of these election rules.

Sometimes, similar to Senator Jamby Madrigal or Senator Richard Gordon attacking the credibility and person of Sen. Manny Villar because of issues that hound him, true or not, ways to discredit and malign candidates happen even in the university level.

Others resort to blatant and indirect mudslinging, sometimes found online, in the social networking sites of the students or fake accounts. Black propaganda is as prevalent or even worse in the campus than in the national stage.

Last year’s campus elections started to utilized not only room-to-room campaign, poster, fliers and pins but also the internet, specifically the social networking sites and the blogs. This year, some parties, who have the money to spend, have even bought targeted ads in Facebook. It’s not far-fetched to see online advertising in Google in the next few years, like how current national candidates dominate the ad spaces and optimization in search engines.

Youth Leaders in Action

As youth leaders of the University of the Philippines, it is necessary and crucial that we must transcend politics, and adapt to the changing times and context of our society. Beyond the colors, or the parties, one thing is clear – we must progress and develop.

In this time that we are faced with the election of our new leaders of government this May 2010, the youth must bond, and select leaders which champion the youth and our nation’s future.

We must rise to the challenge of informing our fellow students in the universities, our families and our community as a whole, of this important role of choosing the best and the right leader who will move us forward together. This is important so that we could make this dream of a better Philippines, not only for us, but for everyone, happen.

It is always said that the youth has the largest stake in this coming elections. Let us prove that we care, that we are not apathetic or indifferent to what is happening not only to us, our friends, but also to the rest of the nation.

Let it be said that we never try quitting, and never quit trying in finding inclusive solutions to this countries’ mistakes and problems. At the end of the day, we, the elected student leaders have a great burden to change and touch the lives of our constituents, and lead each other to a better state.

Barbie's Surprise Kiddie Birthday Party

December 04 - Barbie's Birthday! The day before, Nico Martin planned a surprise kiddie birthday party for the barbie girl, rather "Barbie Kaye." But before that, it was all drama from the moment he contacted me (he didn't know how to reach me because I lost my globe phone number), to our supposed thesis group meeting, how to distract Barbie (oh by bringing her to Eastwood, buying stuff like 1 kilo of rice which costs 80+ pesos?, etc.), and finally bringing her to her supposed NCPAG Student Council meeting in McDo Katips, where she was already half and hour late (and they have a fine per minute late for the meeting). SURPRISE! :) Oh, the surprise of the night are Ronald McDonald and Grimace. They remind me of my 1 year-old Mcdo birthday party (as if I remember what happened).

UP Football Team Champions UAAP Men's Football

The Ateneo field roared with the Maroons as U.P. clenched the championship last Tuesday against the FEU Tamaraws. 1-0 was the final score. The game was intense; players from both teams played really well, while the crowd cheered hard for U.P.



Kriska "KKK", Beng, START AIT and I (so as other UP students and alumni) were there to watch and support the team as they battled for the point, and defended the goal to the very end, to victory! :) Congratulations!

Post-elections Hang-over

First of all congratulations to all those who won in the USC elections! Secondly, congratulations and good luck to the Executive Committee-elect of UP Chinese Student Association. I know you'll be able to do great things next year.






USC Elections is over. As for me, I am very thankful for all the people who have been there to support, guide, train, and nourish my desire to become a better student-leader.



More than a party, KAISA has been a family to me. Looking back, I am amazed with what we've all gone through, what we've all sacrificed and what we've all learned throughout this experience. This is a new chapter that would soon be written with more wonderful lines and stories that matter.






They say that what I am having right now is the expected withdrawal symptoms from the elections. Truly, I miss being with my slatemates every night, trainings upon trainings, sleeping late and waking up really early, going room-to-room expecting the unexpected, and a lot more.






Elections pushed each and everyone of us to work and perform more. It only proved that "yes, we can." Deep inside we all knew we could do it, but all the while, I could ask, "why weren't we able to do this before the campaign started?" Sometimes, it just takes some push or even a tap for one to be able to go that extra mile. That for me is what we all want; that for me is what counts.



After all of this, yes, it's hard to go back to "normal student life." Though hard and tiring, I miss everything. Now, it's time to perform, to walk the talk. I hope that all of you would still be there. :)

KAISA Tayo sa USC - Dare to Unite. Be the Difference.

KAISA - Nagkakaisang Iskolar para sa Pamantasan at Sambayanan presents to you the 2009-2010 University of the Philippines Student Council, with Titus Tan as Chairperson, and 12 equally brilliant and exceptional students from different colleges in UP as Councilors.

Kaisa launched its campaign calling and daring the UP Students to Unite, and Be the Difference. This years' slate marks the difference we will face, do and be.

In his Open Letter to Iskolars, Titus talks more about his 12 USC Councilors, and how they'll "represent the responsive and unifying leadership" the USC needs for the new era.

USC: Unite Students for Change

Our goal is a USC that is able to unite students for change through a right mix of relevant projects, practical services and timely campaigns that capture students’ enthusiasm and motivate their idealism.



To maximize student involvement and reach out to as many students as possible, we have crafted our activities to cater to a wide range of interests. Moreover, we desire to excite student interest through innovation and creativity in our activities as well as by tapping a diverse array of tools for information dissemination.



In this General Program of Action, KAISA offers an overview of the activities it intends to carry out through the USC. We realize, however, that any genuine General Program of Action should not lock out the proposals of other parties as well as other activities that iskolars may later suggest. Thus, our list is by no means close-ended. Rather, it is an evolving program that is by itself ready to be implemented, yet also open enough to accommodate other activities iskolars may desire.



Let us Unite and See the Difference. Please wear Yellow on Tuesday, 9am. The Meeting de Avance will be held at the AS/ Palma Hall steps.
