Rufo's Famous Tapa

Rufo's is this well lit "24/7" Tapa restaurant along San Miguel Avenue. I think this restaurant is perfect for those who work late, and after work, you would just want to grab anything nice to eat. This is your place. I think this also caters to people who have night jobs. Apparently they don't run out of customers (based on several occasions I went and actually dine in here).

So this is their menu. It's quite simple and you could easily pick what you would want to eat.

They pride their tapa having this "sauce pa lang, ulam na!" (the sauce can already be a viand) phrase. Well, in any advertorial line, it's better that you actually experience or try it before agreeing or believing to what you read. In this case, the sauce is really tasty and a little bit salty for me, but in any case, I think you would really love it. The serving of the tapa, on the other hand, was just few.

"Chicken Barbeque" (BBQ) (Php 85) The chicken was tasty. Sure it's delicious, and can satisfy you but it's not the kind of dish that I would die for.

Tokwa't Baboy (Php 55). They gave nice proportion of Tokwa (Tofu) and Baboy (Pork), and the sauce they used is yummy too.

Costa Brava Cakes at the Rockwell Powerplant Mall

I first tasted the heavenly dessert cakes of Costa Brava when Jones, my cousin Tippi's boyfriend, brought one for Mimi during her birthday. Since then, I was already looking for this treat. Then CSA interviews came, and Chelsea brought cupcakes from this, and it was really delicious. The more I became head over heels trying to look for this place.

After attending the Dayo Blogger Event, Arpee, his wife Noreen, Nina, Eric and I went to Rockwell. And this is when I finally met Mrs. Juda Liu, maker of the famous cakes. She recommended that I get the Caramel or the White (which she said is Kris Aquino's favorite, "the one she wrote about," Mrs. Liu added). I got both, at Php 120 a box each.

I think you can still find Costa Brava cakes at the lower level of Rockwell Powerplant Mall until the end of October. Hurry and taste this divine dessert creation! :)

Manna Specialty Bakery

One of my recent food find is Manna Specialty Bakery at Esteban Abada, the street parallel to Katipunan in Quezon City. I can say that their breads are not of the ordinary and will really bring heavenly gastronomic pleasure to you. Surely. Their all-natural homemade breads will really win you.

We got the Blueberry Focaccia (Php 75), Cheddar Dill Focaccia (Php 65) a big Whole Wheat Loaf (Php 75) and Apple Butter (Php 100) that came in a glass container. Everything was superb!

So that you know when and what to order/ grab some bread love, they provided a Bread Sched!

In the shop, they have a cork board where you can post stuff. They also sell some native bags which costs from anywhere around 120-150 pesos. Not bad!

Metro Manila Film Fest 2008 Entry Dayo: Sa Mundo ng Elementalia Behind the Scenes

Eric and I were at EK's OktakonEK event, when I first learned about Dayo. There I met Dayo's Marketing Officer Jinky Salvado and Film Director Robert Quilao who explained to me stuff about the film. Right there and then, I really saw the film's potential to greatness. I suddenly felt the passion to help this film out. :) Less than a week later, they invited us bloggers to tour their studio and to learn more about the film and the people behind it.

Dayo's display at the OctakonEK in Enchanted Kingdom

And so, they gave us a sneak peak from the cartooning, drawing, coloring to the rough-draft of the movie itself with dubbed voices already, and the movie's musical score. Here are some of the pictures I took from the event at their Makati Office.

Dayo Movie Producer Jesse Lasaten showing bloggers the rough movie output to hype them on what to expect in the movie. And excited and thrilled we were after we saw what's in store for the public.

I tried my hand on the coolest and high-tech drawing gadget, the WACOM Cintiq, they are using to make the film. This technology is the same thing the likes of PIXAR and Disney are using.

So what's great about this film? (you might ask)
  • All FILIPINO made!
  • My idol Lea Salonga's singing the Theme Song
  • The song was done by a full orchestra and Gerard Salonga
  • It's fully digital/ no papers used in the creation
  • It stars a powerhouse cast
  • ...and 'coz I've seen a lot of scenes in the movie, and frankly, this is the bomb! :)

Vince and Patricia Hizon for The White Hat and Everyday is Your Birthday Foundation

The WHITE HAT – Italian Frozen Yogurt company’s third CELEBRITY-FOR-CHARITY event resumes this October 25, 2008 (SATURDAY) with TV-PERSONALITY Patricia “Shaan” Bermudez-Hizon and EX-PBA PLAYER & husband Vince Hizon as their special guests.

The famous couple will be wearing THE WHITE HAT uniforms as they serve customers for the day in an effort to raise money for their charity foundation called “EVERYDAY IS YOUR BIRTHDAY FOUNDATION”. For almost 8 years, EIYBF has provided a way for people to share their blessings with the needy. It encourages people to celebrate their own birthdays not just through the usual way of splurging on a big party with friends & family, but to also share the greatest gift of LOVE, to the less fortunate.

EIYBF gathers donations (cash donations, old and new toys, books, clothes, etc.) to give to the less fortunate from the celebrant, the celebrant’s family and friends, and from companies and corporations. But more than just the gifts and donations, the celebration is also about building a “relationship” between the children and the volunteers who instantly become big brothers and big sisters. For the elderly, the volunteers become part of the family.

Also, once a year, EIYBF organizes a special day camp for orphans and children who are cancer patients to give them a day of happiness. This event is participated by many volunteer celebrities.

“We’re very glad to be part of the Hizon’s charity fund drive,” says Eric Chao, marketing manager of THE WHITE HAT. “We try our best to make customers feel extra special when they come to our store by serving them the best –tasting yogurt from Italy made from fresh milk in a clean hygienic environment. Our yogurt is guaranteed to have live active yogurt cultures (called Probiotics) which promote health. We also give our customers a selection of more than 21 healthy premium toppings. And then, on these special events, customers can get to support worthy charity organizations because 50% of their purchase amount will be donated directly to the chosen foundation of our guest celebrity servers.”

So if you have a big heart and a big appetite, drop by THE WHITE HAT at the Mall of Asia on October 25 (Saturday) and help make a difference

TEA-riffic!

I just can't get enough of the good aromatic yummy tea, so I got myself a stash from all over the place. Yeah, you're right! I am a self-confessed tea addict. I love tea! Sue me! :P

As I am of Chinese descent, it's no surprise that we're all tea drinkers. Chinese restaurants = Service Tea galore. And we're no exception to that rule. Now, my obsession with Jasmine, Oolong, Black, Green, Chai, English Breakfast, and a lot more... oh I forgot Ms. African Sunrise from CBTL, will not go away anytime soon. :)

*EDIT* All I want for Christmas are boxes of African Sunrise Tea from Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf please? :P

Oh, and I heard of a newly opened chic cafe over at Cainta, Rizal, across Town and Country Executive Village, with nice yummy tea, which is presented in an innovative way. I wonder when will I be able to visit.

Service Learning Option - A Blog Action Day post

Our SLO or Service Learning Option for my Public Administration 161 (Ethics and Accountability) opened realities to me. For the last two Saturdays of August, I have conducted leadership-training seminars to underprivileged Grades 4-6 elementary students of Nayong Tsinoy, a resettlement/ former GK village created by the Federation of the Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in Ascoville, Caloocan City.

Our objective was to be able to teach them or at least show and give them inputs (based on their own basic knowledge and understanding of their surroundings) what it is to be a leader and a team member. We gave them several activities that would ultimately gauge, show, and teach them all about leadership and the skills and values (like cooperation, peace and unity among themselves and to others) that would make them better persons.

I felt that some of the activities we had weren’t really in line with their age level and ultimately didn’t impact them (as much as it would impact, say, a high school or college level student). But even with that constraint, we managed to pull through and cut across that problem with more explanations and other activities on our part.

During one of our activities, we were shocked to find out that these kids, at that early age, have knowledge on what's happening in our country. We did an activity which made them portray current situations on relationship among peers, relationship or status in their family, in school, in their community, and in our country.

To our surprise, some of what they portrayed are: their fathers beating up and shoo-ing off suitors of their "ate-s" (older sisters) and "tomadors" and "sugarols" (alcoholics and gamblers) wrecking havoc on the streets, and the war in Mindanao. It came to a point that we had a hard time leveling, relating and explaining to them those situations and where those situations lie in the grander scheme of things of being a leader.

But even with such social perspectives in these kids' (as young as 10 year-olds) minds, I guess I was thankful that some of them acted out something good they see in society - friends helping each other when one of their other friend is sick.

After everything we did, Teacher Mia, the head teacher/volunteer there, debriefed us. She was very thankful of what we have done, and that she hopes that we continue to do these kinds of things because according to her, "it gives hope and promise for these kids' future." It is with these little acts of kindness and sharing our time and talents (despite everyone's busy academic schedule) she holds the hope of a brighter and better future for the country and for the less fortunate people.

I was touched and moved by her words. This for me was more than enough to make all the exhaustion (from preparing, going there, and delivering the activities) go away.

Recently, we had our assessment in class, and our professor asked us if we see that these kids will be the hope of our future. Honestly, I really don't know if these kids will be among those people who'll result to stealing or street rambles (God forbid) or become leaders in their own communities.

The fact is that there are a lot of impovirished kids here in the Metro (What more in the provinces, right?) But what makes me keep on hoping, that indeed there will be future for these kids and for the Philippines, are the people who continue to go out of their comfort zones and continue to make a difference in the lives of our less-fortunate brothers and sisters. One small act of kindness may go a long long way in the hearts of these kids.

I really feel happy and fulfilled after everything. I nearly didn't want to go through with the Service Learning Option, and opt to just make a policy paper, but after everything, I am glad I did. From start until the end – from the trainings we went through with Eduk Inc. to the actual output we delivered and when we carried out our plans and did our best in making an impact and being the difference to these kids – we came out better individuals, who are more aware of the situations of these people.

My hope is that other schools consider giving Service Learning Options to their students. It's through these activities we open our hearts, minds, and actually act out and live out what we learn inside the four walls of our very comfortable learning institutions.

UPCAT - University of the Philippines College Admissions Test is 2008 Cinema One Original

No it's not time for the UP College Admissions Test, in fact, it just ended more than a month ago. It's the recently talked about UPCAT - The Movie! I got this from an email from Thea; then her sister Tiffy, and a lot other people did the viral messaging, and now it's famous, at least in the internet world!:)

So what is this talked about film? It's about two teenage boys who believe that passing the UP College Admissions Test is the passport to their dreams. They each have different views in life, and different goals they want to achieve - just like many other UPCAT passers now studying (who have studied) in UP.

I guess this film wants to connect with the students, and the alumni and give somewhat of a reality check for each UP student/faculty and staff/alumni regarding their hopes, goals and dreams, and where they are right now.

Here's the first ever trailer-video I saw:

And this is from Director Roman Carlo Olivarez:

UPCAT is a 2008 Cinema One Originals film with Happy Endings Films in cooperation with Bigtop Media Productions and Digitrax Sound Productions. It's original content and direction is by Direk Roman Carlo Olivarez.

Adidas King of the Road 2008 Race Results

The Adidas King of the Road 10k and 21k race results are out! I got it from runningDATCom.

Adidas KOTR 5 km Results
Adidas KOTR 10 km Results
Adidas KOTR 21 km Results

From the previous post, I thought that my time was 1:50:08, but it turned out that I was mistaken (I knew I wasn't really looking at the clock correctly..), it's 1:21:23 at a pace of 8:09 mins/km. I was surprised that I did better than my Nike Human Race run!! Woot! Even though I really wasn't able to train for it because of academic constraints (ahem, hassle talaga, ahem), I did a little better.

Adidas King of the Road 2008 Champion!

Yesterday was the big event. Admittedly I really didn't think I would be able to finish the 10km long route for the fact that I haven't been able to train for it. I was swamped with school work and blog event here and there. The only time I got to run was last Thursday, and I really felt bad after. Also, my running buddy, Tiffy, wasn't around either because she wasn't able to train too.

Even though this was the case, I finished the race and championed over my apprehensions. I'm not sure if this was the correct time, but the clock said I clocked in 01:50:08 (I hope that was the right clock I looked at - because there were 3 clocks there). Either way, though I lagged from my previous run and I really didn't place over-all, I was happy and I thank God I was able to make it! :)

Oh I saw Pastor Dennis and the rest of the Victory Greenhills contingent. I'm so happy to see them running "the healthy race", and most of all, running for God.

It's the last week for this semester - last stretch until our well deserved semestral break. PUSH PUSH. We can all do this! I have these to worry about in the week to come:
  • Stat 101 4th Exam
  • Stat 101 Finals
  • PA 113 Case Study Paper
  • PA 141 Finals
  • PA 141 Policy Analysis Paper Report

Legaspi Sunday Market Food Find!

Last Sunday, Eric and I were headed south to Enchanted Kingdom (my next post) for a media event. Because we were early (a usual habit I, at least for me, practice is to arrive really early) we decided to side-trip to Legaspi Sunday Market.

Since I haven't had breakfast, I did some food-hunting. I ended up eating at Casa Goñi Spanish Cuisine. (sorry for the lack of better photo) I ordered the Paella de Pollo or the Chicken Paella, and it sure was yummy and filling.

~o~
Casa Goñi Spanish Cusine
Brgy. San Lorenzo Sunday Market
9am-2pm at the Legaspi Carpark
Macille or Loubel @ 517-8776

Right beside the Casa Goñi is Imang Salud, one of Pampanga's best melt-in-your-mouth Ensaimada. I had a taste of their Plantanilla, and all I can say is that this sweet coconun dessert is truly to die for.

Another interesting and yummy dessert treat is the Med.Chef stall. If we weren't going to an event, I would've bought these delectable cakes and pies.

After all these hustle and bustle of academic life, I vow to return and be merry and filled (I mean fulfilled). :)
