The Red Shoes showing on March 10

Yesterday night, some members of media, including us bloggers, and people from the academe were invited to preview the upcoming film by Raul Jorolan entitled "The Red Shoes." (See Synopsis at the bottom of this post)

I really like the movie. In fact, I think everyone should see it! It’s a not-so-cheesy and commercial love story (unlike the love-story movies being shown in the recent past). On the contrary, this film is packed with literary metaphors, symbolism and historical references, you'd enjoy giving meaning yourself. It’s an unconventional film with a twist which I am sure you’ll appreciate. The director has a very keen eye for detail and timing, and the cinematographer's really good. Kudos and Congratulation!

I was able to chat with the Director after the screening, and he was really happy with the reviews the film was getting, especially from the younger generation. He says that we inspire him through conversation about arts, movies, politics, and anything and everything else. It keeps him young and motivated to do more, and excel.

The Red Shoes Trailer

“The story unfolds through three decades as we tell Lucas’ story,” Jorolan says. “Young, resolute and in love, there is nothing that will stop him from pursuing his goals – not even committing an act amidst the chaos and confusion of the 1986 People Power revolution -- all in the name of love.” We could see how they've wonderfully tied everything together.

The movie also stars Liza Lorena, Tessie Tomas, Iwa Moto, Tetchie Agbayani, Monica Llamas and Tirso Cruz III. It will be shown in local theaters on March 10, 2010.

THE RED SHOES SYNOPSIS
In 1986, in the evening of the People Power Revolution in the Philippines, ten-year old Lucas Munozca catches sight of the First Lady’s 3000 pairs of shoes at the Presidential Palace and decides to steal a pair.

In 2006, Lucas, now a professional wedding videographer, is seemingly stuck with one kind of footwear: white sneakers. He, too, is stuck with his past; unable to move on from losing the love of his life, the “well-heeled” Bettina, who, when they were still a couple, always wore flats being taller than Lucas.

Lucas’ mother, Chat, is similarly stuck on her past. Doing manicures and pedicures for a living, Chat gets to take expensive shoes off the feet of affluent women. After all these years, she still grieves the loss of her husband, Lucas’ father, Domingo. A construction worker who loved to walk barefoot, Domingo perished along with an untold number of workers during the collapse of an upper floor of the Manila Film Center in 1981, a pet project of the then First Lady Imelda Marcos. Chat has almost given up trying to contact the spirit of Domingo until she meets a talented spiritist, Madame Vange, who happens to be, of all things, an Imelda impersonator.

When Lucas accepts a high-profile wedding video assignment, he discovers that one of the principal sponsors is Madame Imelda Marcos herself. He is then forced to confront the consequences of stealing the shoes of the former First Lady and to reveal the real reasons why he did it: for poetic justice and for love.

As a boy, Lucas had originally wanted to steal two pairs of shoes--one for his mother Chat to be a token replacement of the shoes she never got for her birthday from her husband Domingo because he died constructing Imelda’s film palace; and another pair of shoes for his childhood sweetheart Bettina whose family had suffered from the Marcos regime. But young Lucas lost his nerves and only managed to steal one pair. And so, he had given the right shoe to his mother; and the left shoe to his beloved.

Twenty years have separated the shoes and, now, Lucas retraces his journey and discovers that the Imelda shoes is his way back to healing and redemption.

President's Tea House in SM North EDSA Annex

President's Tea House, a restaurant originally from Binondo, Manila, can now be found in the newly opened SM North EDSA Annex. I would think that since the Binondo branch was under renovation for a long time, they expanded to the north, to cater to more people.

Last week, my uncle and I tried the branch because Binondo's too far and we haven't eaten there for the longest time. I didn't want to order for us both, so my uncle did the ordering. We got Hakaw (of course), which was great as ever. We got some more dimsum, which included a Japanese Siomai.
IMG_0706IMG_0708IMG_0710

We also ordered a special Scallop Fried Rice, MaBo Tofu and Steamed Fish Fillet. The MaBo Tofu was surprisingly very tasty. The pork was soft and easily chewed, while the sauce was flavorful. The Steamed Fish Fillet didn't taste awful or smell like it was beginning to rot. It was perfectly smooth and it easily melted in your mouth.

Beng Villamil, Ton Bacungan and KAISA sa University Student Council

2 more days to go before the University Student Council elections in the University of the Philippines - Diliman. It's a year now since I won as one of the 12 councilors in the USC, the highest student organ in charge of 22,000 UP students, and supposedly their rights and welfare. It was a year full of ups and downs. It's tough, but we survived. It's time to pass on the torch to the young bloods. Who am I going to entrust the USC and almost 23,000 students, Iskolars ng Bayan? Of course to someone I trust and I know to have the best intentions and qualifications for the job.

Beng and Ton

My vote goes to Beng Villamil, incumbent College of Science Student Council Chairperson for USC Chairperson and to Ton Bacungan, incumbent Engineering Student Council Councilor for USC Vice-Chairperson. Beng is the only one who has handled and led a student council, he has the most number of experience in student service, and the brightest and most talented in the bunch if not at least at par with the other two. Ton, on the other hand is very much intelligent, diligent, experienced, hard-working, and most of all very humble. He is not a brat.

Since both have handled or been part of the Student Councils of the College of Science and the College of Engineering, the two largest colleges in the University, respectively, we could see the support both colleges have given to the two. [College of Science Statement of Support for Beng Villamil][College of Engineering Support for Beng Villamil and Ton Bacungan]

Capping everything off with the USC Debate Forum, we could clearly see who emerged to be the fittest or the best for the job. It's Beng Villamil and Ton Bacungan.

Also, let's remember the United Councilors of Beng and Ton. Tbacz Bactol, Marielle Bordado, Ranel Cheng, Chorva David, Marvee dela Resma, Val Inting, KKK-Kriska Kalingking, Gino Leynes, Cams Maranan and Pat Tobias.

Together with them are our College Representatives to the USC. Gumi Gumilla for the College of Architecture, Cyrus Cruz for the College of Engineering, Mela Abesamis for the College of Home Economics, Gelo Flores for the College of Human Kinetics, Jeric Cruz for the College of Law, Des Ico for the National College of Public Administration and Governance, Rey Reyes for the College of Science, and JC Danganan for the Asian Institute of Tourism.

These are our candidates, and I pledge and assure you that they're the best for the job, and that they will work hard for you, the students of the University of the Philippines - Diliman, as they have had in the past. They bring with them their own strengths, weaknesses, personalities and experiences in this journey. Let's VOTE for them this coming February 24.

KAISAKAISA sa USC

Move Forward with YouSC

Our goal is a USC that moves forward in building a new culture of leadership and service in our University.

To achieve this goal, we propose a balanced and feasible General Program of Action (GPOA) that empowers you, the iskolar, through worthwhile activities. We offer relevant projects and practical services that enhance the quality of your UP experience. And we provide timely campaigns and advocacies that motivate your idealism to serve the country.

KAISA has always been at the front of providing an innovative, inclusive and responsive GPOA. This year, we uphold our reputation of platform excellence through a GPOA that brings us together to move forward with a USC built on your trust, a USC fueled by your ideals, a USC that stands for you.

This elections, let’s move forward and make the USC a true YouSC.

Rise to the Challenge! Move forward, make it happen!

Uncle Cheffy at Eastwood City

After trying the Bungee Fun in Eastwood City Walk, we headed out to Uncle Cheffy in the new Eastwood City Mall for dinner. It was my first time to dine there, and I must say it was something worth trying and repeating. :)

IMG_0644

Thanks to Eastwood City Mall, a group of bloggers, including myself, was able to try Uncle Cheffy, one of three restaurants of the Chef Quarters restaurant chain. What struck me is the concept of "brick oven global cuisine," using traditional slow cooking process to create yummy dishes that burst out flavors.

IMG_0645IMG_0659

For starters, we were served two kinds of Salads namely the Prawn/Pomelo Salad (Php 295/495) and the Uncle Cheffy Salad which consists of crispy pork, asparagus, potatoes and mesclun in dijonaise dressing (Php 230/495). The Uncle Cheffy Salad instantly became my favorite because it has everything in it, and it tastes unique and yummy.

IMG_0657IMG_0671

After the salad, we were served the Memphis Barbecue US Beef Rib Finger (1000g) (Php 595) and the Thai Style Fried Pla-pla. The beef was so tender, it almost melts in your mouth. The pla-pla was fresh, but didn't really have that much flavors going on.

IMG_0667

For the main attraction, Uncle Cheffy is known for its Panizza. They've let us tried the All Meat Panizza (Php 450), East Meets West Panizza (Php 495), Uncle Cheffy Favorites Panizza (Php 395) and the Seafood Lovers Panizza (Php 425). I love everything! :) It's like the Yellow Cab Dear Darla pizza, where you include some greens and tomatoes on top of your pizza, you roll it, then eat it; but this is much more tastier and less fatty-feeling.

After we were stuffed full, then came the desserts. They're equally tasty and unique. Sweet Potato Creme Brulee (Php 95), Chocolate Roulade (Php 135), Chocolate Parfait (Php 95), Panacotta with Ube Vichysoisse (Php 110). I got Sangria (alcoholic, with wine) for my drink. The gastronomic experience was superb. Thank you.

I love Yoshinoya, Japan's #1 Beef Bowl

IMG_0579
IMG_0531IMG_0532

Yoshinoya dates back to 1899 at Nihonbashi, Tokyo where a Japanese man named Eikichi Matsuda created a delicious recipe of beef and rice known as Gyudon beef bowl. This recipe became popular worldwide and sparked the expansion of Yoshinoya in over 1,000 outlets in Japan, US, Taiwan, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and the Philippines.

In the Philippines, it was franchised by Century Pacific Inc., makers of Century Tuna, in 2001. To date, it has 7 branches, serving quality authentic Japanese fast food, in Metro Manila. Yoshinoya is available at Parksquare 1, SM Megamall, Robinsons Galleria, SM North EDSA, Greenhills, SM Mall of Asia and Sta. Lucia.

Why I LOVE Yoshinoya

IMG_0558

Yoshinoya, unlike any other Japanese fast food restaurant, serves the best beef, which is simmered in a special broth of herbs and spices. Once it has reached your bowl or plate, and is on top of steaming white rice, you'll forget you're in the Philippines. A lot of people claims it tastes exactly like the Yoshinoya in Japan.

The photo above is the JUMBO-C (Gyudon + Ebi Tempura). The beef is so soft and tender and very juicy. You don't need anything to compliment its taste. It may look dry and bland, but wait until you've tried it. You'll surely love every bite. The Ebi Tempura was awesome as well. :)

IMG_0535IMG_0538IMG_0552IMG_0566

Some of the other dishes you may want to order in Yoshinoya: Japanese Fried Chicken (Php 80), it was like any other normal fried chicken, maybe the least Japanese-y of them all; Mixed Tempura (Php 125); Chicken Teriyaki, which comes in regular (Php 90) and large (Php 125) - said to be the healthiest option in Yoshinoya; and the Shiitake Shu Mai and the Kani Shu Mai (Php 50) - the Shiitake is love. 'Nuff Said.

Jumbo Plates at Php 165: JUMBO-A (Gyudon + Chicken Teriyaki); JUMBO-B (Gyudon + Beef Yakiniku); and JUMBO-C (Gyudon + Ebi Tempura)

UP FAIR: Yesthursday

Third day into the UP fair, it was the most attended night so far (I don't know if Friday trumped Thursday though). It was so jam-packed with people (thankfully not by JJs or "orcs" as the hosts calls them). Yesthursday required the bands to play 90s music, which was cool, for me at least. It was a pleasant break from the loud-bordering-metal sounds that were played two days before. Congratulations to the Circle of Entrepreneurs, and UP Adcore, for such a successful memorable night.

yesthursday

One of the surprises during the performances is the band called Alamid. I only knew of them that night because of their crowd-hit 90's song from the famous Filipino-morning-kid-show Batibot. I was a Batibot kid, but I totally forgot the episodes. They say that Batibot's the Filipinized version of Sesame Street. :) Anyway, they performed the Batibot song, and gave it their own twist...now just watch this to see and hear what I mean! XD

I saw Chris Ng touring the Koreans around the fair grounds. He had this Korean characters tattooed on his arms. I forgot what it meant. Do you know what it means? Also, to the right is the crowd (taken from the backstage) and Sheena, who's one of the USC people in charge of the programs, tired and resting (behind her are very loud speakers). :p

Election Campaign Season begins in the Philippines

Today* marks the start of the official campaign period for the 2010 National elections in the Philippines as set by the Commission on Elections. But for students of the University of the Philippines Diliman, it marks the second day of the official campaign season for University Student Council elections, which will be held this February 24, 2010. Since yesterday was the University Research Break for most of the students, the start of the national campaign season and the local campus campaign season can be said to be on the same foot.

Inquirer Presidential Forum

People argue that the UP local campus politics incubates the same atmosphere, if not the same mentality and experience, with that of the national counterpart. One of the reasons this is said is maybe because those who are running the national campaigns of these presidential, vice-presidential, senatorial and even the local candidates were once UP students themselves, and maybe at one point or another, have managed or have been involved with local campus politics when they were younger.

Besides labeled as being similar to the national scene, experiences and observations show that UP political parties, namely Alyansa, Kaisa and Stand-UP, the three political organizations in the University of the Philippines – Diliman, are cutthroat vying and besting each other for the available University Student Council positions for the Academic Year 2010-2011.

Campaign: Blue, Red and Yellow

Colors have been associated with those who are running for the Philippine Presidency. Senator Noynoy Aquino, Former President Erap Estrada, Senator Richard Gordon, Senator Jamby Madrigal, Former Defense Chief Gibo Teodoro and Senator Manny Villar have been identified with the colors yellow, orange, red, green, green and orange respectively. These colors represent, brand and package these candidates in a way they stand out and appeal to their supporters and the people in general.

IMG_0262IMG_0267

In UP, this parallelism and similarity is very much seen inside the university as colors, more specifically, red, blue and yellow, are matched and identified to the longstanding political color-spectrum debate of Stand-UP, Alyansa and Kaisa.

The University elections will come as a shock, and sometimes an entertainment, for the freshmen, who will get to know and see first time the candidates who are campaigning all around the campus. They will also see some if not many similarities and differences between campus politics and national political exercises.

As starters, candidates are trained all the works – from how to dress, walk, talk, shake hands, engage students in interactive discussions, and a lot more – this is why when a candidate comes in your classroom and campaigns, you’ll be impressed at them

IMG_0271

They are packed very properly, and can answer questions from local campus issues to the broad national debates, even presidential candidates answer during forums. Sometimes, you would even consider your student leader better at answering questions than your actual presidential candidates.

Issues and the Internet

All electoral exercises have rules promulgated by the authorized electoral body responsible for the elections. But even with rules in place, people get to find loopholes and ways how to circumvent or avoid violations of these election rules.

Sometimes, similar to Senator Jamby Madrigal or Senator Richard Gordon attacking the credibility and person of Sen. Manny Villar because of issues that hound him, true or not, ways to discredit and malign candidates happen even in the university level.

Picture 14Picture 15

Others resort to blatant and indirect mudslinging, sometimes found online, in the social networking sites of the students or fake accounts. Black propaganda is as prevalent or even worse in the campus than in the national stage.

Last year’s campus elections started to utilized not only room-to-room campaign, poster, fliers and pins but also the internet, specifically the social networking sites and the blogs. This year, some parties, who have the money to spend, have even bought targeted ads in Facebook. It’s not far-fetched to see online advertising in Google in the next few years, like how current national candidates dominate the ad spaces and optimization in search engines.

Youth Leaders in Action

As youth leaders of the University of the Philippines, it is necessary and crucial that we must transcend politics, and adapt to the changing times and context of our society. Beyond the colors, or the parties, one thing is clear – we must progress and develop.

In this time that we are faced with the election of our new leaders of government this May 2010, the youth must bond, and select leaders which champion the youth and our nation’s future.

IMG_0258

We must rise to the challenge of informing our fellow students in the universities, our families and our community as a whole, of this important role of choosing the best and the right leader who will move us forward together. This is important so that we could make this dream of a better Philippines, not only for us, but for everyone, happen.

It is always said that the youth has the largest stake in this coming elections. Let us prove that we care, that we are not apathetic or indifferent to what is happening not only to us, our friends, but also to the rest of the nation.

Let it be said that we never try quitting, and never quit trying in finding inclusive solutions to this countries’ mistakes and problems. At the end of the day, we, the elected student leaders have a great burden to change and touch the lives of our constituents, and lead each other to a better state.
