Oh My Gulay, Vegetarian in Baguio

When in Baguio, one must not miss out on "Oh My Gulay." It was my first time to go here. Good thing that I agreed to try it out because this vegetarian restaurant which is nestled on a top floor of a building along Session Road in Baguio, is really a MUST TRY place if you want to eat good and healthy food.

Upon entering the place, you'll be transported to a magical place, with full of art and greens. You would not expect to find something like it in Session Road, what more on the rooftop of a building. And since it was my first time, we tried to order as much as we can.

IMG_0853

For starters, we ordered the Bulaklak Tempura (Php 65) - Tempura Kalabasa blossoms with tempura sauce; and the Onyon Rings Yon (Php 65) - Crispy deep friend onion rings.

IMG_0863

For the main course, we got the Anak ng Putanesca (Php 125), which is their version of the popular pasta dish, enhanced with a hint of cayenne pepper.

IMG_0850

And the Oh My Gulay Rice (Php 135), which is made of native brown rice with ten vegetables in season mixed with their Mongolian sauce, topped with steamed tofu and omelette.

Boholano Cuisine at Amorita Resort's Saffron Restaurant

While I really absolutely had fun and enjoyed my Bohol Country-side Tour and my fantastic Garden Villa accommodation, care of Amorita Resort in Panglao Island Bohol, my main purpose that night was to try and taste the signature Boholano Cuisine prepared by Amorita's Saffron Restaurant.

IMG_7067

If I am to summarize the food experience and the taste in a word, it would be gingery. Bohol’s cuisine is characterized by the use of a lot of ginger, lemongrass and a turmeric. So here's what Amorita's Saffron Restaurant made for me that evening. Let's start the food adventure!

C2 Signature Series Pinoy Favorites

Treated my family last week to C2 Classic Cuisine, thanks to Redge, who gave me a C2 Signature Series GC to use. Good thing that I brought my family with me because the set was a lot to finish on my own, given that the serving size of each dish was huge.

We were asked to choose among C2's 3 Pinoy Favorite sets, dishes that are award-winning and uniquely Classic Cuisine:
Set 1: Seared Tilapia in Coconut Emulsion served with Lumpiang Hubad, Walastik, Pandan Rice and Pandan Iced Tea;
Set 2: Crispy Kare Kare served with Tatlong Ensalada, Sizzling Bangus Belly, Rice and Iced Tea; and
Set 3: Seafood Inasal served with Chicharong Monggo at Crispy Paksiw, Sisig Express, Rice and Iced Tea.

We got the Set 2 :)

The star of the Pinoy Favorite Set 2 is the Crispy Kare Kare (Php 685) - C2 Bestseller! Crispy, boneless pork leg served with sauteed vegetables, and rich peanut sauce.

Crispy Kare Kare

Along with it was the Tatlong Ensalada, or three kinds of salad. This dish was served with Salted Egg, Mangga't Bagoong (Mango and Shrimp paste), and some eggplant in really yummy sauce.

Tatlong Ensalada

Last but definitely not the least was the Sizzling Bangus Belly (Boneless, of course!) I love this dish.

The set came with pandan rice, and iced tea. You've got to try this Sooo Pinoy sets! :)

XO Kitchen's Special Chinese Comfort Food

XO Kitchen "a chinese delicacy" is a simplistic, almost hole-in-the-wall type, yet artistic and eye-catching Chinese restaurant that serves delicious home-cooked comfort Chinese favorites, passed on in the Tan family, along Jupiter street in Bel-air, Makati. Last week, my former adviser and fellow alumni Florencio Sebastian III (Mr. Sebs or Sebs, as we fondly call him) invited us to try out this restaurant he made and helped designed. As I was intrigued both by the looks of the restaurant and the food, of course, I accepted the invite :)

XO Kitchen's Menu: Ala Carte (Pork, Seafood, Beef/Mutton, Chicken/Pigeon), and Noodles/Soup Menu | Rice Meal (Pork, Seafood, Chicken, Beef), Dimsum, and Others Menu | Vegetables, Rice, Egg, Desserts, and Drinks Menu | New Dishes

From Buendia, we turned right at Makati Avenue, and took the left to Jupiter St. From there, it's to your right; it's easy to spot. At first look, you can see the well designed outside structure, that sure makes passersby curious about the restaurant. Since I don't really like to do the ordering for a bunch of people, and we were just invited, we asked Mr. Sebs to order for everyone. He got us these food, which he likes and are his personal favorites.

Fried Noodle with Seafood (Php 130) - You can still taste the crunchy to soft noodles, with really tasty sauce and generous serving of different kinds of seafood. | Seafood Fried Rice with Salted Fish (Php 120) - I'm not really fond of fried rice with fish, but this tasted well. The fish blended well with the rice and other ingredients put into the dish. I just hope that the serving size was bigger. In any case, two servings of the rice were enough for 5 adult men who had not had their breakfast at 11:30am. :))

Their dimsums are a must try! I haven't had the chance to try their Hakaw, which, in my personal opinion, should be the benchmark on how good the dimsum set of restaurants are (if you had to measure or compare). We had the Fried Shrimp Wonton (Php 85) and the Shrimp Kutchay Puff (Php 75). I would suggest you stick with the Fried Shrimp Wonton; or better yet, get the steamed Hakaw (Php 95), which I would say will taste great, based on the taste of the Fried Shrimp Wonton. Yummy. I crave. I crave!

The star of the show, well one of (because they're all good, I tell you!), is the Steamed Three (3) Kinds Egg (Php 100) - This dish is made up of chicken egg, duck egg and century egg. Can you imagine? It's soft, smooth, and melts in your mouth. The sauce can use some more kick for my taste, but it tasted great as it is.

If you're craving for some beef, I recommend that you try the XO Kitchen Beef Special (Php 230), which is made of premium soft beef with really tasty sauce and herbs in the dish. I also recommend that you get the Breaded Fish with Seaweed (Php 230). Although you can't really taste the seaweed in the fish (or that was just me?) this breaded fish dish is a winner. It comes with a tartar sauce to enhance the flavors.

IMG_7922IMG_7921

For dessert, you can try the Black Gulaman (Php 50) or the Mantou or fried bread (Php 60) which comes with condensed milk dip. But I heard their Sesame Ball with Almond Milk is also a winner! :) The photos below are a) Mr. Sebs ordering our food b and c) interiors of the restaurant. I enjoyed my lunch, and I was very satisfied with the food. I will surely go back, maybe with friends or with my family! Nomnomnom! :)))

Big Daddy's Chicken (大雞排): Taiwan's Famous Crispy Chicken Chop

IMG_7314

Big Daddy's Chicken (大雞排) just opened its Mall of Asia branch a few days ago to serve Taiwan's famous crispy chicken chops to the public. It was fortunate that we saw the brightly lit orange store which opened on that day, when we were looking around for a place to have lunch. Mind you, from the outside, it smelled really good - it will make you go curious about the food. We checked out the menu, and decided to try it, and blog about it.

Their bestseller, as indicated in the menu below, is the chicken chop (Php 80); but since we were really hungry that time, we decided to go for the original chicken chop with rice and mushroom soup (Php 90). To our delight, it tasted really good. I hope to go back soon and try the chicken chop with creamy pasta (Php 95)

Big Daddy's Chicken Bestseller the Original Chicken Chop, with rice and soup. You can have the chicken chop in a variety of flavors (Chili, Nori, Lemon or Pizza), or 2 flavors mixed in one order. I like the original the best.

IMG_7319

Big Daddy's Chicken Beverages - African Red Bush Tea (Php 30) and the Iced Green Tea (Php 30). Personally, and I think my best friend would agree with me, I like the Iced Green Tea more. I really can't wait to go back! :)

The Tangerine Tree is still alive

This started way way back when I was still a little boy (according to my parents), they became known because of their really yummy Food For The Gods. It was a surprise for me and my parents to see that they have grown and became more successful today.

Tangerine Tree :3

Right now, they have more products besides their FFTG. (Clockwise from L-R: Butter Royale, Fruits and Nuts, Choco Chum, Food for the Gods)
Tangerine Tree Goodies

After tasting all of the products, my family have agreed that it's still their Food for the Gods which ranks #1 among the 4 treats, follwed by the Fruits and Nuts, then the Choco Chum, and lastly the Butter Royale. In my opinion, I really can't decide between the FFTG and the Fruits and Nuts, but one thing's for sure, I like the Butter Royale the least.

P1010081

The Kulinarya project, A Guidebook to Philippine Cuisine, signed by Chef Myrna Segismundo of Restaurant 9501 in ABS-CBN and Foodie Magazine.

"Believe me, sangkatutak na pagtatalo ang nangyari diyan." No wonder it came out what it is right now. Superb! Congratulations and Thank you for this bold move, and timely action, to put Philippine Cuisine and the Philippines on the map.

It is my dream and wish that I will be able to find all of the collaborators of this wonderful and vivid book and let them sign my copy. :)

Kulinarya, I believe, ran out of copies already, and is on its second run. Do check out your leading bookstores for copies of the book. Pray they still have one. Happy cooking this Christmas season!
