The "Black Pope" visits the Philippine Province

Reverend Fr. Adolfo Nicolás, SJ, the current Superior General of the Society of Jesus (SJ) came to the Philippines last week. He celebrated The Eucharist in commemoration of the return of the Jesuits to the Philippines 150 years ago.

"The Superior General of the Society of Jesus is the official title of the leader of the Society of Jesus—the Roman Catholic religious order, also known as the Jesuits. He is generally addressed as Father General. The position carries the nickname of Black Pope, after his simple black priest's vestments, as contrasted to the white garb of the Pope." "The Superior General’s visit to the Philippines will hopefully foster greater union among collaborators within the various Jesuit apostolate in the Philippines." The Father General, as he is commonly called, visited Xavier School and Ateneo de Manila University among others.

"Fr. Nicolas was Director of the East Asian Pastoral Institute in Quezon City from 1978 to 1984, and later served as rector of the theologate in Tokyo from 1991 to 1993, when he was appointed Provincial of the Jesuit Province of Japan. In 2004 he returned to the Philippines after he was named Moderator of the Jesuit Conference for Eastern Asia and Oceania. On January 19, 2008, Fr. Adolfo Nicolas was elected by General Congregation (GC 35) as the Order’s thirtieth Superior General and was promptly confirmed by Pope Benedict XVI."



In his stay in the Philippines, he also gave a keynote address in the Jesuit Basic Education Congress (JBEC) on the Challenges and Issues in Jesuit Education in the Irwin Theater of the Ateneo de Manila University.

What Ateneans think of HR 1109 - An Ateneo Statistics Circle Study

The following note is an independent study of the Ateneo Statistics Circle on HR 1109 and CHA-CHA

HR 1109 and Charter Change

A survey was conducted to Ateneo students with regard to the passing of House Resolution 1109 and amending the constitution. The objectives of the study are as follows:

(1) To determine whether Ateneans believe that amending the constitution is necessary.

(2) To determine the Ateneans’ view regarding the primary purpose of pushing Charter Change now

(3) To determine whether Ateneans would want to shorten, lengthen or not change the terms of the following officials: President, Vice President, Senators and Congressmen.

The survey was conducted for 3 days over June 16 to 18, 2009 using self-administered surveys of 367 Ateneo students. The number of students per year level per school was in proportion to the total population of school year 2008-09.

Results/Conclusions

The results show that 55.0% of the respondents are aware that HR 1109 has recently been passed on June 2, 2009. 65.8% of these people do not agree with the passing of the house resolution while only 11.4% express agreement. Moreover, the results show that 22.8% are undecided. Results continue to show negative popularity of the resolution as 65.8% of those who are aware of the HR 1109 passage think that its primary purpose is to extend the terms of the incumbent officials. A good proportion of 19.3% think it is for improvement of the political system of the country while 10.4% believe it is for creation of economic reforms.

The survey also asked students whether they will support amending the Constitution or Charter Change after the 2010 elections. 43.9% of the sample says that they are undecided of their stand come Cha-cha in the future. 34.3% disagree with supporting Cha-cha while only 21.8% agree. The results also show that of the 367 respondents, 15.5% do not agree with Charter Change right now and in the future (after elections) while 10.1% do not agree with Cha-cha at this time but will support it after the elections. 5.2% support Cha-cha anytime; that is, now or in the future.

Lastly, the Ateneans were also asked whether they prefer to shorten, lengthen or have the terms of government officials as it is. The question was asked for the president, vice president, senators and congressmen respectively. For all officials, it is preferred that their terms remain as it is. 70.0% agree to retain the president’s six years, no re-election and the vice president’s six years, one re-election terms. 68.4% do not want a change in terms for the Senators which is six years and one re- election. 67.8% prefer the same term for a congressman which is three years and two re-elections.

Ateneo choirs to stage free thanksgiving concert for the community

On Sunday, 7 December 2008, 6:30PM, Ateneo's singing groups will treat the community to an evening of sacred, liturgical, and inspirational music through the concert, Take and Receive: The First Festival of Ateneo Music, at the Church of the Gesù, Ateneo Loyola Heights campus.

The concert gathers Ateneo's home grown and award-winning groups, the Ateneo Boys Choir, Ateneo High School Glee Club, Dulaang Sibol, Ateneo College Glee Club, and Ateneo Chamber Singers. They will perform with the Jesuit Music Ministry artists, Blue Symphony, Bukas Palad, Himig Heswita and Musica Chiesa. Distinguished Filipino musician and composer Ryan Cayabyab's medley arrangement of the different "Take and Receive" compositions by the Filipino Jesuits will be one of the highlights of the concert.

Fans and supporters of these Ateneo singing groups can expect to be regaled by the songs that have made these groups both distinct and popular, resonating Ateneo's fine musical legacy and the unique spirituality that inspires its music.

Dulaang Sibol is the Ateneo High School theater club founded and directed by Onofre Pagsanghan. Bukas Palad, meanwhile, was co-founded by Fr. Manoling Francisco, SJ 20 years ago. The Ateneo College Glee Club, the oldest university chorale in the country and winner in the 2006 Miltenberg (Germany) Choral Competition and Ateneo Chamber Singers, winner in the 2006 Tolosa (Spain) Choral Contest, will showcase their world-class talent in polyphony and classical music.

Another highlight of the concert is a tribute by the Jesuit Music Ministry artists to Fr. Eddie Hontiveros, SJ, or "Fr. Honti," the acknowledged Father of Philippine Liturgical Music, who passed away in January 2008. The Mass hymns that Fr. Honti composed in the 1970s, after the Second Vatican Council called for inculturation of the liturgy, continue to be sung in every parish to this day, an enduring testament to the intimacy of his music with the heart of the Filipino and the message of Jesus Christ.

Take and Receive: The First Festival of Ateneo Music marks the Ateneo's 149th anniversary, the year of "Deepening Spirituality," the second theme of a three-year countdown to Ateneo's 150th anniversary, or sesquicentennial. Ateneo de Manila University will celebrate its sesquicentennial on December 10, 2009 with the theme "Building the Nation."

Foodistas in Antipolo

The Foodistas went to Antipolo today to do a little project (feature on street food) for Table for Three, Please. The place we went to is just outside the Antipolo Church, where the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage is at. We all entered the church, and Joey took some shots. I prayed for peace of heart and mind for my friends and for myself. We proceeded to business after - went to the Pasalubong Center, where all the manangs are selling Antipolo and Philippine products.

After buying food, interviewing, taking pictures, we decided to dine at Vieux Chalet for lunch, since we were around the area already. It was a road trip! :3 We didn't know where it was. We got lost (slash) felt we were lost, but Vieux Chalet was worth it and all that! At the end of the trip, we hit two birds with one stone - the feature and the resto review. I had a great time :)

After everything, I got off at Katipunan, had my hair cut (my hair's not ugly anymore Achi Denise) and waited for Aldwin at Ateneo before going to Earl's house for a little class reunion. Earl just got back from Cornell and we had dinner at his house; plus we played Wii (Super Smash Brothers and Mario Party for the win). Too bad I didn't get to take pictures. Good thing Alex Uy brought his camera...and took all the shots.
