Hong Kong: Kam Wah Cafe & Cake Shop 金華冰廳

First day in Hong Kong. A lot were in store for us. We were too excited to explore and look for bargains and finds, so we started our day out early. We geared up for an all day walking spree.

Not far from where we are staying, we saw lots of people outside lining up. We were curious so we checked it out. It turned out that people were lining at this cafe restaurant called Kam Wah Cafe & Cake Shop 金華冰廳 to buy bread; and since we haven't had breakfast, we decided to get one each for ourselves.



The funny thing is, we did not really know what kind of bread we are buying, but we did anyway. Do what the Hong Kongers do? (as they say, the locals know the best) :)) I saw some articles, photos and awards posted on their wall, plus the long queue; so it only means that this is worth trying. It is not until we got back in Manila, with some research, did I find out that the place is famous in Hong Kong, and even to Hong Kong artists and stars, which you (if you are lucky) can bump into.

The bread is called the Polo Bun 菠蘿包, or more commonly known as Pineapple Bun (I do not know why they call is Pineapple Bun when there is no pineapple used to make it). This treat is #6 in CNNGo's "40 Hong Kong foods we can't live without" :)

"一个多少?" (Yi Ge Duo Shao?) How much for one piece? I asked. HK$4.5 :) We hurriedly took photos, and started eating while walking. The first bite is really surreal. I do not know if we are just that hungry, or it tastes like heaven. The golden brown crust is aromatic, crunchy and a hint of sweetness. Inside, you have a hot, soft and really really delicious core! I can have this for breakfast every morning.



As proof that we loved the Polo/Pineapple Buns 菠蘿包, we had the same bread for breakfast the next day. Now, the price increased and the buns were selling at HK$5 a piece. We still bought them anyway. The buns usually come with a slice of butter, if you're eating dine-in. Also, try their Egg Tarts, HK Milk Tea or Coffee. I heard it is good too :)
